Amboseli National Park is now under the management of the Kajiado County government following a Cabinet decision to transfer control from the national level to the county level.
The Cabinet’s approval, announced on November 14, aims to enable the local administration and community to benefit more directly from conservation efforts in the park. Kajiado County is now tasked with creating policies and strategies to enhance park management and increase revenue.
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku expressed gratitude for the transfer, noting that it marks a significant step in empowering local communities. He emphasized that the decision would help foster peaceful coexistence between residents and wildlife.
“It has been a lengthy process with numerous legal challenges, but we had strong support from the Maa community and Kenyans at large, as demonstrated during the public participation forums,” said Governor Lenku. He also thanked President William Ruto for honoring his commitment to rectify historical injustices faced by local communities.
“Today’s Cabinet decision is a testament to your promise that Amboseli would return to its rightful custodians – the Maa people,” added Lenku.
In August 2023, President Ruto announced plans for the national government to share 50% of the revenue generated from national parks with counties hosting the conservancies. He highlighted the vital role of county governments in conservation efforts during his address at the Maa Cultural Festival in Narok County.
“By sharing this revenue, we ensure that the funds uplift the living standards of those who are instrumental in protecting the environment and wildlife,” stated the President.
A public participation process regarding the park’s transfer was conducted between June 24 and July 10, 2024. Sessions were held in various locations, including the Maasai Technical Training Institute in Kimana, Kisumu’s Regional Commissioner’s Hall, and Nyeri Town CDF Hall, with additional meetings in Kisii and Meru.
In November 2024, the Ministry of Tourism established a technical team to oversee the transition. This team was responsible for creating the legal framework necessary for the park’s handover to Kajiado County.
With the transfer complete, Kajiado joins Narok and Samburu Counties in managing parks within their jurisdictions. The county will now have the authority to set entrance fees for Amboseli National Park, allowing for better control over local and foreign tourist charges as part of the new management structure.
