The 10th edition of the Baringo Cultural Festival and Kimalel Goat Auction has been rescheduled to Monday, December 16, and Tuesday, December 17, 2024, as announced by Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi.
President William Ruto is expected to preside over the iconic goat auction on the second day, where close to 4,000 goats will be sold.
Two Days of Culture and Festivities
Governor Cheboi, speaking during a press briefing in Kabarnet town, encouraged residents and visitors to attend the event in large numbers. The festival will begin at Lake Baringo with a boat competition, accompanied by traditional music performances and a youth extravaganza in the evening.
On the second day, the renowned Kimalel Goat Auction will showcase the region’s agricultural products and traditional salty Nyama Choma, a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
“This event is an opportunity to experience the rich culture, heritage, and hospitality of Baringo,” said Cheboi, who was joined by Deputy Governor Eng. Felix Kimaiyo and County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa.
Highlighting Community Unity and Livelihoods
This year’s theme, “Utamaduni Wetu, Mifugo Yetu, Utajiri Wetu” (Our Culture, Our Livestock, Our Wealth), celebrates the resilience and unity of Baringo communities. The goat auction aims to boost local livelihoods while preserving cultural traditions.
Innovations and Assurances
Cheboi highlighted a unique addition to this year’s festival: an online platform enabling customers to order Baringo meat and have it delivered nationwide. He assured farmers that payments for sold goats and other products would be processed within three days.
“We invite all Kenyans and visitors to join us for this iconic event and experience the best of Baringo’s culture and heritage,” Cheboi concluded.
