Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan has issued a strong warning to Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairpersons involved in illegal fishing activities in Lake Victoria. Lilan highlighted that some BMU officials have been accepting bribes from fishermen as “protection” money, allowing them to use illegal fishing gear in the lake.
“We will take action against any officials who are facilitating illegal activities in the lake for personal gain,” Lilan stated.
He also warned of increasing incidents where fishermen smuggle fishing nets worth millions of shillings from neighboring Tanzania, leading to disputes when they fail to pay the sellers. These illegal activities have often resulted in fights on the lake, which the fishermen later claim are instances of harassment.
The County Commissioner urged BMU officials to collaborate with the Nyumba Kumi Initiative to help combat illegal fishing and foster a secure environment that would allow fishermen to work peacefully and improve their livelihoods.
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Wakiaga Polytechnic in Suba North Sub-County, Lilan also called on local chiefs to eradicate gambling activities, specifically targeting the aviator betting strategy. He noted that gambling had become a major factor behind frequent suicide cases in the region.
“It’s either the gambling machines or the chiefs, because the two cannot coexist. Be vigilant and ensure no gambling takes place in your areas,” he warned.
As schools close for the long holiday, Lilan encouraged parents and churches to work together to protect children and ensure their safety during the break. He reminded parents of their responsibility to keep their children safe so they can return to school unharmed.
