The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has donated four ambulances to enhance primary healthcare services in the remote regions of Kajiado County. This initiative aims to address critical healthcare challenges, particularly maternal health in underserved areas.
Improving Maternal Health
While receiving the ambulances, Kajiado County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Alex Kilowua, expressed gratitude to KOICA for the donation. He highlighted the positive impact the ambulances will have in reducing maternal deaths by improving access to health facilities in remote areas.
“One of the greatest contributors to maternal deaths is late referral systems. Leveraging these ambulances and the toll-free number, we aim to assist every mother in need of ambulatory services,” Kilowua stated.
Strengthening Primary Healthcare
Kilowua further emphasized the County’s commitment to strengthening its primary healthcare agenda by establishing primary care networks. These networks are expected to enhance health indicators and bridge the disparity between healthcare services in urban and rural areas of Kajiado.
The ambulances will be deployed to rural Level Four hospitals, including Namelok, Ewuaso Oo Nkidong’i, Mashuuru, Ngatataek, and Elang’ata Enkima. Kilowua also revealed that KOICA has pledged to provide an additional two ambulances in the near future.
KOICA’s Contribution
KOICA’s Acting Country Coordinator, Ms. Songi Han, expressed hope that the ambulances will save the lives of expectant mothers and their unborn children, significantly advancing the County’s healthcare initiatives.
In addition to the ambulance donation, KOICA has partnered with the Kajiado County Health Department to build the capacity of healthcare workers and supply essential medical equipment. This collaboration underscores KOICA’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Kajiado County.
