The Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC) Affairs, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), and Regional Development, Beatrice Asukul, has called for increased accountability from NGOs operating in Turkana County.
Speaking in Lodwar, Asukul addressed an incident where an NGO falsely claimed ownership of a project she had initiated during her time as the County Executive Committee Member for Water. She stressed the importance of transparency in development initiatives, highlighting that her ministry has created a framework to govern the interactions between NGOs and local communities.
“This framework is designed to ensure that development initiatives are community-driven and have a real impact,” Asukul stated.
Meanwhile, Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai attributed the slow pace of development to debts inherited from the previous administration, including a Sh 650 million KRA debt in unpaid taxes. Despite these financial challenges, Lomorukai reported progress, noting that his administration had cleared Sh 2.3 billion in pending bills.
Governor Lomorukai also appealed to the national government to consider former regional leaders, including former Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro, former Cabinet Secretary John Munyes, and former Turkana Central MP John Lodepe, for state jobs.
