The Garissa County government has established a dedicated department led by a Chief Officer to address the needs and concerns of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) effectively.
Speaking during the commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities at Garissa Primary School, Governor Nathif Jama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering PWDs and involving them in decision-making processes that affect their welfare.
Employment Opportunities for PWDs
Governor Jama revealed that his government has already employed 115 PWDs across various county departments, with many of them holding senior positions. He pledged to increase this number in future recruitment drives, emphasizing the importance of inclusion in governance and development.
“Together with our development partners, we aim to leave a lasting legacy as champions for PWDs,” said Jama.
Eliminating Discrimination and Promoting Equal Opportunities
Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo condemned discrimination against PWDs, highlighting the need to recognize their inherent talents and abilities.
“God, in His wisdom, created everyone uniquely. Despite physical differences, each individual has a role to play in society. Equal opportunities must be provided to ensure PWDs can develop skills and contribute meaningfully,” Mwabudzo stated.
Progress and Encouragement
Mwabudzo noted the progress made in embracing PWDs, including employment opportunities offered by both county and national governments and the establishment of special funds to support their sustainability.
He urged PWDs to seize available opportunities and avoid self-pity, stressing that success is within their reach.
“We have come a long way, but there is still more to be done. PWDs should be actively involved in government programs and take advantage of the resources available to them,” he added.
A Collaborative Effort
Governor Jama called on all stakeholders to join efforts in creating an inclusive society where PWDs can thrive. With structured support systems and increased employment opportunities, Garissa County aims to set an example in championing the rights and welfare of PWDs.
