The government has assured farmers of a sufficient supply of certified maize seeds ahead of the upcoming planting season. Felix Koskei, Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff, provided the reassurance during a visit to Kenya Seed Company stores in Kitale, where he emphasized the country’s readiness to support agricultural productivity.
Koskei confirmed that Kenya Seed Company, the country’s leading seed producer, has prepared 15 million kilograms of certified maize seeds ready for distribution, with an additional 13 million kilograms undergoing final treatment. He also stressed that measures are in place to prevent the circulation of counterfeit seeds.
“Kenya Seed Company is well-prepared to meet the country’s seed demand. The government is committed to ensuring farmers receive high-quality seeds on time as part of efforts to enhance food security,” Koskei stated.
Improved Maize Production Attributed to Government Support
Koskei highlighted increased maize production this year, thanks to good farming practices and government initiatives such as the fertilizer subsidy program.
“This year, maize production reached 36 million kilograms, an increase of 8 million kilograms compared to last year. Such progress demonstrates the impact of strategic government interventions,” he noted.
Call for Agricultural Diversification
Urging farmers to reduce overreliance on maize, Koskei pointed out Kenya Seed Company’s focus on diversifying seed production to include wheat and pasture seeds.
“Last year, Kenya Seed produced 300,000 metric tonnes of wheat seeds. This year, production has scaled up to 1 million metric tonnes. We encourage farmers to embrace diversification to enhance resilience and profitability,” he remarked.
Strategic Partnerships for Long-Term Food Security
Koskei commended Kenya Seed Company’s collaborations with Agricultural Development Cooperation (ADC) and the National Irrigation Authority (NIA), which provide crucial support in addressing food security challenges.
“Partnerships with organizations like ADC enable Kenya Seed to access additional land for seed production. These interventions are essential for stabilizing food prices, benefiting both farmers and consumers,” he emphasized.
The government remains committed to fostering a robust agricultural sector by ensuring timely seed supply, encouraging diversification, and nurturing strategic partnerships for sustainable food security.
