Devastating floods have struck Ahero town in Nyando Sub-County after River Nyando burst its banks early Friday morning, displacing hundreds of families. The flooding, caused by heavy overnight rains, forced residents to evacuate their homes when the river overflowed around 3 a.m.
Villages Affected
Nyando Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Elijah Maranga reported that approximately 350 households have been affected so far, with the number expected to rise as assessments continue. The worst-hit villages include Kondhiro, Oketha, Kamadumbi, and Kochola in Tura Sub-location.
Relief Efforts Underway
Displaced families are currently seeking refuge by the roadside, awaiting humanitarian aid. Kisumu County Red Cross Coordinator George Opidi confirmed that the Kenya Red Cross Society Action Team, along with other stakeholders, is conducting a rapid assessment to guide relief efforts.
The National Government, Kisumu County officials, and humanitarian agencies are closely monitoring the situation to coordinate responses.
Transportation and Safety Concerns
DCC Maranga assured residents that the Ahero Bridge on the Kisumu-Nairobi highway remains passable for vehicles and pedestrians. However, he warned that continued rainfall might cause an overflow, potentially disrupting transport.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant and relocate to higher grounds to avoid loss of life and property destruction,” Maranga cautioned.
Broader Impact of Heavy Rains
This flooding incident is part of the wider impact of Kenya’s ongoing long rains season, which started in March. Nationwide, approximately 200 people have died, over 40,000 have been displaced, and more than 200,000 have been affected by the rains.
Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to prioritize safety and heed evacuation warnings as the heavy rains continue to pose significant risks.
