The Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) has completed the automation of weighbridges along the Northern Corridor, a key trade route linking the Port of Mombasa to landlocked countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan. This move aims to alleviate traffic congestion and streamline cargo transport in the region.
Tackling Persistent Traffic Challenges
The Northern Corridor has long been plagued by traffic jams and delays at weighbridges, frustrating motorists and cargo transporters alike. To address these challenges, KENHA has installed high-speed weighing sensor systems at critical points, including Gilgil, Mai Mahiu, and Suswa. Additionally, the authority has increased the deployment of mobile weighbridges to enhance efficiency across the route.
These measures follow widespread public outcry over frequent gridlocks that have disrupted operations on this vital artery of East African trade.
Improved Compliance and Reduced Overloading
Danka Africa Kenya Limited, the company overseeing weighbridge management, reports a 99% compliance rate among local and transit truck drivers. Jackson Kimuyu, the assistant operations manager, attributed this success to the automation system, which allows for preliminary filtering of trucks, ensuring swift and accurate weight checks.
The new system has significantly reduced overloading, especially among local transporters who previously ignored weight regulations. Kimuyu emphasized that all cargo transporters must comply with weight limits set by both local and East African laws to protect the road network and ensure fair usage.
Enhancing Regional Trade and Logistics
KENHA’s automation initiative complements broader government efforts to modernize infrastructure, including the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to the Uganda-Malaba border. By improving weighbridge operations, the initiative is expected to:
