The Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) Marathon returned for its second edition on Sunday in Butere Sub-County, Kakamega County, furthering its mission to sponsor Social Health Authority (SHA) premiums and co-payments for underprivileged residents accessing healthcare at Hamptons Hospital.
The marathon attracted thousands of participants and supporters, all rallying behind the cause of universal healthcare. The event garnered Sh45 million in pledges from corporate entities and NGOs, ensuring annual SHA sponsorships for over 500 families.
Organizers celebrated the marathon’s growing influence as a vehicle for social transformation, with the free medical camp at Hamptons Hospital offering treatments and facilitating SHA registrations, reinforcing the event’s healthcare objectives.
Prominent figures, including MMTC’s Julius Mwale, local MP Tindi Mwale, and a diverse assembly of foreign dignitaries, royal representatives, business leaders, and politicians, attended the marathon. The competition featured various race categories: the 42 km elite, 21 km elite, 10 km, 5 km community run, and a 1600 m family run.
In the highlight of the men’s 42 km elite race, Elkanah Langat emerged victorious with a time of 2:18:42, narrowly beating Abraham Kiplimo and Alpha Kisa. Langat’s win marked a significant achievement following his recovery from injury, building on his previous successes in the Italy and Kobe Marathons.
