Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has filed a petition at the Embu Law Courts seeking to halt the auction of properties belonging to Gakundu Coffee Factory. The factory faces auction due to outstanding loans dating back to 2014.
In addition, MP Mukunji has urged Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya to expedite the waiver of a Ksh 69 million debt owed by the factory to the Commodities Fund. He highlighted that Parliament has allocated Ksh 2 billion in the 2024-2025 budget to address such debts, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the coffee sector.
This initiative is part of a broader government effort to alleviate the financial burdens on coffee farmers. The government has pledged to clear Ksh 9 billion in debts owed to financial institutions by coffee farmers nationwide. Co-operatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya confirmed this commitment, noting that the National Treasury has already allocated Ksh 2 billion in the current financial year to begin settling these debts.
