A report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has ranked Nakuru County as the leading economy in the country, surpassing Kiambu County.
The 2024 Gross County Product (GCP) report shows that Nakuru’s economy expanded to 785.75 billion shillings in 2023, contributing 5.7 percent to Kenya’s GDP, up from 4.9 percent in 2019.
In comparison, Kiambu’s GDP stands at 760.82 billion shillings, representing 5.6 percent, a slight decrease from 5.7 percent over the same period. Experts credit Nakuru’s economic growth to significant investments in agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure.
Kiambu’s marginal decline signals a need for diversification and innovation to sustain its economic position.
The report also identifies the top five counties, with Nairobi at the forefront, followed by Nakuru, Kiambu, Mombasa, and Machakos. Mombasa experienced the largest decline, with its GDP contribution dropping from 5.0 percent to 4.8 percent during this period.
