Security agencies in Nambale Sub-County have destroyed seized illegal items, including illicit brews and bhang, in a move aimed at combating crime and curbing the sale of harmful substances in the area.
Speaking during the exercise at the Nambale Police Station, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Carolyne Onchoka stated that the exhibits included items left behind after suspects escaped and those related to concluded cases.
“In collaboration with the Sub-County Security team, we have decided to destroy these items to ensure they cannot be misused by officers or the public,” Onchoka said.
Seized Items Destroyed
The destroyed items included:
- 238 liters of chang’aa
- 25 kilograms of bhang, valued at approximately Ksh 750,000
- Two bales of polythene bags imported from Uganda
- A lottery machine that had reportedly been a distraction for students.
DCC Onchoka reaffirmed the security team’s commitment to eradicating the trade and consumption of illicit brews and urged residents to engage in lawful businesses. She noted that security officers intercept over 2,000 liters of chang’aa and kangara weekly.
Community Collaboration
The DCC thanked residents for providing information on individuals involved in the illegal trade and called for continued collaboration to address the issue effectively.
Business Community Support
Nambale Business Community Chairman Peter Otiti commended the security team for their efforts and called for the initiative to be expanded across the entire county.
“Destroying illicit brews and bhang will enhance security in our county. I urge all administrators to arrest those involved in this illegal trade and take swift action to protect our youth from the dangers of drugs,” Otiti said.
The destruction of the illegal items marks a significant step in ensuring public safety and addressing the broader challenges posed by illicit trade and drug abuse in the community.
