Police in Teso South Sub-County have arrested 17 youths accused of terrorizing residents in the area. The arrests followed a crackdown on criminal groups that have been linked to cases of rape and violent attacks, leaving victims with serious injuries.
Criminal Groups Dismantled
Speaking at the Teso South Police Station, area Police Commander Francis Gachoki revealed that the suspects belong to criminal groups operating under names such as 42 Brothers, Kapedo Warriors, Vijana Wepesi, and Kemodo Warriors.
“These groups have been involved in heinous crimes, including raping women and attacking cane cutters,” said Gachoki.
The police commander reported that on November 12, eight youths were arrested and presented in court, where authorities were granted time for further investigations. Community engagement and sensitization efforts then led to the arrest of nine more suspects.
Weapons and Drugs Seized
During the operation, police confiscated 31 rolls of bhang, machetes, and pangas, which the suspects allegedly used to intimidate and harm residents.
Call for Public Support
Commander Gachoki vowed to dismantle all illegal youth groups in the area and called on the public to provide information on the remaining gang members, some of whom are believed to have fled to neighboring Uganda.
“When we intensify security measures, these criminals often escape to Uganda. However, we have reinforced our efforts and will ensure they are apprehended and face the law,” he stated.
He also noted that parents of the suspects support law enforcement’s efforts, urging that legal action be taken against those involved.
Community Safety
The police commander emphasized the importance of collaboration between security agencies and the public in ensuring lasting safety. “We rely on the community for information to eradicate these criminal groups,” he added.
The operation is part of a broader initiative to restore peace and security in Teso South, ensuring residents can live without fear of violence or intimidation.
