Police officers from Nyeri and Nyandarua counties have undergone specialized training to enhance their ability to distinguish between genuine and illicit alcohol. The one-day workshop, organized by the East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL), was held at FK Resort in Nyeri and brought together around 80 officers, including Officers Commanding Stations (OCS), Officers in Charge of Crime (OCC), and Officers Commanding Police Divisions (OCPD).
Importance of the Training
Central Region Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi commended the initiative, noting its critical timing as the festive season often sees an uptick in the distribution of illicit brews. The training, he said, equips law enforcement officers with essential skills to identify and eliminate illegal alcohol during crackdowns.
“This training is crucial during the festive season, as unscrupulous individuals may take advantage of the festivities to sneak in illicit brews and sell them to unsuspecting consumers,” Ndanyi remarked.
Regional Efforts Against Illicit Brews
The training in Nyeri is part of a broader regional effort, with similar sessions planned for Murang’a, Kiambu, and Kirinyaga counties. Officers from all ranks, including those in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), will participate to ensure a unified approach in tackling the menace.
Ndanyi emphasized the need for collaboration among stakeholders in the liquor industry to protect consumers and uphold the reputation of legitimate alcohol businesses. He called on manufacturers and other players to support the government’s efforts in eradicating illicit brews.
“The war on illicit brews requires collective effort. Protecting consumers cannot be achieved by police alone—we need manufacturers and stakeholders to join us in this fight,” Ndanyi stated.
Public Awareness and Safety
Ndanyi urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and cautious about their alcohol consumption, particularly during the holiday season. He also assured residents of the region that security agencies have put in place measures to ensure their safety during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“We have a comprehensive security plan to ensure a peaceful festive season. Residents can go about their business and celebrations knowing that security will be provided 24/7,” he added.
Future Initiatives
The training is expected to bolster law enforcement efforts in combating the proliferation of illicit brews in Central Kenya, a region where the issue poses a significant threat to public health and safety. By involving officers from various divisions and fostering partnerships with industry stakeholders, the government aims to achieve sustainable success in this ongoing battle.
