President William Ruto has begun a three-day visit to the Mt Kenya region, aiming to gauge the effects of his decision to form a broad-based government. This trip comes after years of criticism from Ruto regarding President Uhuru Kenyatta’s alliance with opposition leader Raila Odinga, which Ruto had blamed for stalled projects and party discord.
Ruto, who had previously criticized Raila Odinga as a major adversary of Mt Kenya, is now working with Odinga’s ODM party, making this visit a significant test of his political strategy and regional influence. The tour also coincides with growing tensions between Ruto and his Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has accused state operatives of targeting him and claims there are plots to impeach him and assassinate him and his allies.
Ruto’s visit, which began with a tour of Embu County, is part of his effort to promote his Government of National Unity and address the region’s support for his administration. He plans to visit Murang’a and Kirinyaga counties, where he will also explain his reasons for collaborating with Odinga.
The President’s new cabinet includes several of Raila’s allies, such as Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, Opiyo Wandayi, and John Mbadi, aimed at stabilizing the country and bridging political divides. The expanded government is being marketed as a solution to Kenya’s divisions and tribalism, promising to unite the country and promote development.
On Wednesday, speaking in Rukuriri, Embu County, Ruto emphasized the goals of his inclusive government, asserting that it would combat incitement and focus on national development. He used the opportunity to address the impact of the Finance Bill, 2024’s rejection, which had sparked widespread protests and led to significant budget cuts affecting various projects.
Gachagua, who is accompanying Ruto on the tour, has been vocal about his grievances, alleging political sabotage and personal attacks. His statements, alongside Ruto’s efforts to consolidate support, will be closely monitored throughout the visit.
