The government has been urged to enhance regular engagement with the disability sector to ensure vital information and resources reach persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Leaders representing PWDs in Laikipia County noted that the number of people with disabilities in the region is rising, yet supportive policies and frameworks remain insufficient. They also highlighted the persistent issue of families hiding their relatives with disabilities, which prevents these individuals from accessing critical services and opportunities for better welfare.
Call for Collaborative Support
Michael Njama, Chairman of PWDs in Laikipia County, and Muna Njomo, a well-wisher advocating for PWDs, stressed the need for collaboration between the government and the private sector to enhance support for people with disabilities.
Speaking at Kinamba trading center in Laikipia West constituency, they distributed assistive devices, foodstuffs, and other essential items to physically challenged individuals in the community. They also called for the government to ensure that PWDs are well-catered for, enabling them to participate fully in daily life without disruption.
Importance of SHA Registration
The leaders urged people with disabilities to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access medical services and other government provisions. Ciciliah Wairimu, a Community Health Promoter, expressed concern over the low registration rates among PWDs in the area and appealed to parents and guardians to assist in facilitating the registration process.
“By registering with SHA, persons with disabilities can unlock a range of essential government services that will significantly improve their lives,” Wairimu emphasized.
This initiative highlights the pressing need for continued advocacy, awareness, and targeted policy action to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, ensuring they are fully integrated and supported in society.
