Schools have been urged to enforce infection prevention and control measures in classrooms, bathrooms, and common areas as Mpox cases in Kenya rise to 33.
Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni highlighted the importance of frequent handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers. She noted that with schools reopening, children are at an increased risk of contracting the disease.
“Students and staff should regularly wash their hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizers, particularly after touching shared surfaces or participating in physical activities,” she stated.
Muthoni also emphasized the importance of proper ventilation and avoiding overcrowding in classrooms. She advised being vigilant for Mpox symptoms and seeking medical attention promptly for testing if symptoms appear.
She described the symptoms as including fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and general fatigue.
Additionally, Muthoni recommended that schools strictly adhere to health and safety protocols during assemblies and sporting events to mitigate the spread of the disease.
“We appreciate the public’s ongoing efforts in helping to combat this outbreak and protect the health of our nation,” she concluded.
