As the festive season approaches, Kisumu City has intensified security to ensure safety for residents and visitors. A multi-sectoral committee comprising the National Police Service, County Government, and non-state actors has been established to address rising crime rates and ensure smooth celebrations.
Combating Crime
City Manager Abala Wanga highlighted that the measures have already disrupted criminal gangs operating in the area.
- Key developments:
- Several suspects have been arrested, and others neutralized by police.
- Intensified patrols in residential areas targeted by attackers.
- Barriers erected in vulnerable neighborhoods to deter criminal activity.
Preparations for Major Events
Kisumu is set to host several events, including the much-anticipated Mzuqa Festival on December 14th, headlined by Congolese Rhumba maestro Koffi Olomide, Zaiko Langa Langa’s Nyoka Longo, and local star Prince Indah.
To ensure the safety of attendees:
- Comprehensive security measures are in place to prevent incidents such as theft.
- Entry to the venue will involve thorough screening of motor vehicles.
- A parking space accommodating 2,000 vehicles has been created.
- Visitors using boda bodas or other public transport will alight at Mamboleo Market and proceed on foot after security checks.
Call for Public Cooperation
Wanga urged residents and visitors to adhere to the measures and assured attendees that all necessary precautions have been taken for a safe and enjoyable festive period.
“We want to ensure not even a single mobile phone is stolen during the festival,” he emphasized.
This proactive approach is expected to enhance Kisumu’s appeal as a festive destination while prioritizing public safety.
