Authorities have heightened security measures in Angata Barikoi, located in Trans Mara South Sub-County, following intermittent clashes between two neighboring communities along the Narok and Migori county border. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, injuries to dozens, and the destruction of several acres of maize crops, according to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan.
Dr. Hassan attributed the violence to disputes over farmland and grazing rights, as both communities rely on livestock and crop farming. He assured residents that law enforcement would conduct round-the-clock patrols to maintain order in the region. “We will also collaborate with officials from the Nyanza region to find a lasting solution to these issues,” he said.
The Commissioner emphasized that anyone caught carrying weapons such as spears, arrows, and bows would face strict legal consequences. “Carrying weapons is against the law. We have deployed sufficient security personnel to protect all residents,” he warned.
Dr. Hassan also cautioned public servants against inciting tensions, noting that officials suspected of instigating conflicts would be closely monitored. He was accompanied on his tour by Rift Valley and county security teams, including County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia.
Local leaders and residents called for community dialogues to help reconcile the long-standing divisions. Angata Barikoi Member of County Assembly Gabriel Mibei requested that Dr. Hassan hold a meeting with his Nyanza counterpart to mediate and resolve the disputes. “We are ready to address the underlying issues that fuel these clashes and ask for assistance in mediating peace,” he said.
This recent meeting follows an earlier peace initiative led by Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu and County Commissioner Lotiatia. Additionally, a General Service Unit (GSU) camp has been established in the area as part of ongoing efforts to prevent future violence and promote stability.
