Tatu City, a sprawling 5,000-acre mixed-use development with Special Economic Zone status, has officially unveiled one of Kenya’s largest and best-equipped outdoor gyms. Open daily from 6 am to 9 pm and free to the public, the facility is quickly becoming a hub for fitness and recreation, attracting residents and visitors from nearby communities.
The outdoor gym features advanced workout equipment, including sky steppers, double health walkers, and rowers, designed to accommodate both beginners and fitness enthusiasts. Complementing the gym is a dedicated children’s play area complete with swings, slides, and climbing structures, making the facility a family-friendly destination.
Angela Muthoga, Tatu City’s Events and Sustainability Manager, described the launch as an exciting milestone in Tatu City’s development. “We are committed to providing world-class facilities that enhance the quality of life for our residents and the public. This gym is more than a place to exercise; it’s a space for community connection, active living, and enjoying Tatu City’s scenic environment. A healthy nation is a wealthy nation,” she said.
The gym is part of the broader Sports@Tatu hub, which includes a 5-a-side AstroTurf football pitch and a full-size basketball court. Kanana Ndegwa, Head of Marketing at Unity Homes, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Tatu City to promote an active lifestyle. “As a leader in affordable housing, we focus on creating integrated living spaces with recreational amenities. The outdoor gym and Sports@Tatu complement our mission to provide family-friendly homes with ample green space and modern facilities,” Ndegwa added.
In addition to these recreational features, Tatu City boasts over 100 kilometers of pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, and nature trails connected by The Green Link, a sustainable network designed to enhance access to green spaces. This year, Tatu City also hosted Kiambu County’s largest running event, with over 5,000 participants, and a cycling event featuring more than 500 professional cyclists exploring the city’s scenic trails.
Located at City Park near Unity Homes, the gym is open daily with no entry fee, though users are encouraged to follow safety guidelines. Outdoor gyms are a rising trend in Kenya and East Africa, fueled by a growing awareness of health benefits and the popularity of outdoor activities, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic limited access to traditional gyms.
These open-air fitness facilities are helping communities stay active and access healthier lifestyles, especially in lower-income areas with limited gym options, while also promoting wellness and social connection across all ages.
