A village in Matiliku, Makueni was shaken by tragedy after a 50-year-old man took the lives of his two sons before dying by suicide. The three bodies were discovered by police on Monday morning, just hours after the horrific incident.
According to police reports, the tragedy stemmed from a domestic dispute with the man’s estranged wife. The couple had separated, leaving the man to care for their two children, aged 16 and 9.
The man was found dead inside the house with a deep throat wound, alongside an empty bottle of poison. A few meters away, the boys were found with their throats slit, blood covering the scene. Authorities recovered the weapon and a suicide note.
Locals reported that the couple had been quarreling for months before the wife left. As police moved the bodies to the mortuary for autopsies, residents gathered at the scene, shocked by the tragic events.
In a separate incident in Kisasi, Kitui, a 30-year-old man was found dead in a suspected suicide, his body hanging from a tree near the Mwiwe River. The man, identified as Kimote Katee, was found with a nylon rope around his neck and his body was taken to the Kitui County Referral Hospital mortuary for further examination.
Authorities have expressed concern over the rising number of suicide cases in the area, with as many as two incidents reported daily. The World Health Organization attributes such cases to factors like joblessness, academic or financial pressures, relationship issues, substance abuse, and mental health conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder.
